Belgians underestimate the importance of bread. For centuries, bread has taken a prominent place in our Western food culture. That bread has occupied an important place for so long is because it is healthy, versatile, easy, nutritious and delicious.
A substantial amount of bread is consumed annually in Belgium. Despite this, only 17% of the population gets the recommended daily amount of bread and grain products. Hence the start of the multi-year program 'Bread. A good story'. That tells a fair story about bread to consumers.
52.9 kilos of bread
Bread consumption per person per year in Belgium is currently at 52.9 kilograms. This includes all the bread that is eaten both at home and outdoors. It is calculated at about 145 grams of bread per day. On average, the Belgian eats about 4.4 slices of bread a day. That bread has been part of our food culture for so long is partly because Belgians are fond of the smell and taste of bread. At the same time, bread is also a versatile and easy product, and bread contains important nutrients and building materials that we need in daily life.
Bread is sustainable
The bread in Belgium is mainly produced with grains from our neighboring countries. More than 90% of the bread is produced locally in Belgium and that makes bread one of the most sustainable foods.
